Case Studies

Manchester Knowledge Capital

Example: A research and evaluation project to assist a client with identifying and nderstanding the innovation environment in the region, working with key stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities in four key areas of Young People, Talent Attraction and Retention Knowledge Sharing for Innovation and Ideas to Investment. Kinetic Cubed delivered support to stakeholders through workshops and consultations and as a result developed business and project ideas to help the city region become a more innovative place for submission to the investment board.

Success: Two projects for each area were developed and put forward to the agency to implement. These projects had buy in from all parties involved as they had been a part of the process from the start.

FCO UK-India Round Table

Example: A high profile bilateral study on behalf of the UK-India Roundtable. This strategy project looked at innovation and wealth creation between UK and India, focusing on university expertise, commercialisation and partnerships in high technology areas e.g. nanotech, biotech etc.

This project involved looking at the various collaborations that can and should happen between UK and Indian Centres of Excellence and how they can create value and economic wealth – income, jobs.

Success: A concise, yet comprehensive report was compiled that covered the areas of the assignment. The report was presented to the UK-India Round Table for their consideration as to how this may influence the policy of the two Governments moving forward.

NWDA Innovation Voucher Scheme

The North West Development Agency (NWDA) Innovation Voucher Scheme was launched in October 2008 with the purpose of encouraging SME’s in the Northwest to engage proactively with the regions knowledge base, which includes Universities as well as commercial organisations.

The scheme aims to encourage 1100 businesses to interact with one of the pre-selected knowledge providers across the Northwest over the next 2 years, by awarding a voucher of up to £3000 to work on a specified project.

Kinetic Cubed are one of the pre-selected knowledge providers. We are actively seeking new companies to join the scheme by tapping into specialist/innovative networks, such as the ICT network in Infolab 21 at Lancaster University and the Science and Innovation Centre at Daresbury; hosting breakfast meetings and 1-2-1 sessions with companies to promote the scheme and to talk to companies about their potential projects.

Through this scheme we help companies who have a commercial focus and who are looking at new overseas markets to access global innovation networks and develop innovative business models/ ideas. We help these companies by working with leading edge institutions and organisations to provide global connectivity through global knowledge transfer and internationalisation opportunities

Examples of the type of projects we are working on include:

  • • Helping an environmental consultancy company to develop their business in Turkey by developing a bespoke research and marketing plan
  • • Helping a highly innovative company from Daresbury SIC to identify opportunities for their product and services in the wastewater sector Europe
  • • Analysing the market potential and business model in Australia for a software product in the legal sector
  • • Assisting a company to identify new vertical markets in the UK for their IT product and services and formulating a business strategy which will help the organisation achieve success in these newly identified areas.

Kinetic Cubed has recently participated as a Case Study in an International Knowledge Sourcing study run by Nesta and the University of Wales (www.nesta.org.uk/university-of-wales-international-knowledge-sourcing-study)

This project will establish best practice in international knowledge-sourcing within firms, and reflect on recommendations for policy and practice.  The evidence will be drawn from an ESRC survey of 10,000 firms.

A firm's external environment is an important part of its innovation capacity. But the external environment is no longer confined to a firm's adjacent territories - but extended to include a much larger geography, expanding with its supply-chain, customers and other organizations and persons in its network. Nearly three quarters of firms in the UK are engaged globally; selling to customers, running operations, and outsourcing or securing goods or services abroad.

The project aims to investigate practical problems associated with absorbing knowledge developed in foreign locations by small firms in the UK.
